IBook G4 Mac OS X Install Disc is still unreadable. Perhaps because it is meant to be read on an iBook? What about another utility/download that will allow me to wipe the drive? Or should I just post on craigslist for an OS 9 System Disc? The 'X' in Mac OS X is roman numeral ten. So, each major release of OS X gets a new decimal point. So, the major release that comes with your iBook is Mac OS X Tiger - 10.4. The highest version that you can go up to free of charge is 10.4.11. Likewise, the highest version of Mac OS X Leopard - 10.5, is 10.5.8. Mac OS X Install Discs from my iBook G4 that installs 10.4.4. A MacBook Pro that can be connected to my PowerBook using FireWire when the PowerBook is in Target Disk Mode. A FireWire cord that can connect my iBook and PowerBook. An OS X Cheetah Install CD that I made from a download. An OS X Puma Install CD that I made from a download. Hi, I am trying to reinstall all of my software on my 4-year old iBook G4. I have the original Mac OS X Install Disc, but my iBook doesn't recognize the disc, it just keeps ejecting it. It recognizes other discs so I am not sure what the problem is. Do I need to buy a newer version of OS X.

These advanced steps are primarily for system administrators and others who are familiar with the command line. You don't need a bootable installer to upgrade macOS or reinstall macOS, but it can be useful when you want to install on multiple computers without downloading the installer each time.
What you need to create a bootable installer
- A USB flash drive or other secondary volume formatted as Mac OS Extended, with at least 14GB of available storage
- A downloaded installer for macOS Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, High Sierra, or El Capitan
Download macOS
- Download: macOS Big Sur, macOS Catalina, macOS Mojave, or macOS High Sierra
These download to your Applications folder as an app named Install macOS [version name]. If the installer opens after downloading, quit it without continuing installation. To get the correct installer, download from a Mac that is using macOS Sierra 10.12.5 or later, or El Capitan 10.11.6. Enterprise administrators, please download from Apple, not a locally hosted software-update server. - Download: OS X El Capitan
This downloads as a disk image named InstallMacOSX.dmg. On a Mac that is compatible with El Capitan, open the disk image and run the installer within, named InstallMacOSX.pkg. It installs an app named Install OS X El Capitan into your Applications folder. You will create the bootable installer from this app, not from the disk image or .pkg installer.
Use the 'createinstallmedia' command in Terminal
- Connect the USB flash drive or other volume that you're using for the bootable installer.
- Open Terminal, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
- Type or paste one of the following commands in Terminal. These assume that the installer is in your Applications folder, and MyVolume is the name of the USB flash drive or other volume you're using. If it has a different name, replace
MyVolume
in these commands with the name of your volume.
Big Sur:*
Catalina:*
Mojave:*
High Sierra:*
El Capitan:
* If your Mac is using macOS Sierra or earlier, include the --applicationpath
argument and installer path, similar to the way this is done in the command for El Capitan.
After typing the command:
Ibook G4 Latest Os
- Press Return to enter the command.
- When prompted, type your administrator password and press Return again. Terminal doesn't show any characters as you type your password.
- When prompted, type
Y
to confirm that you want to erase the volume, then press Return. Terminal shows the progress as the volume is erased. - After the volume is erased, you may see an alert that Terminal would like to access files on a removable volume. Click OK to allow the copy to proceed.
- When Terminal says that it's done, the volume will have the same name as the installer you downloaded, such as Install macOS Big Sur. You can now quit Terminal and eject the volume.
Use the bootable installer
Determine whether you're using a Mac with Apple silicon, then follow the appropriate steps:
Apple silicon
- Plug the bootable installer into a Mac that is connected to the internet and compatible with the version of macOS you're installing.
- Turn on your Mac and continue to hold the power button until you see the startup options window, which shows your bootable volumes.
- Select the volume containing the bootable installer, then click Continue.
- When the macOS installer opens, follow the onscreen instructions.
Intel processor
- Plug the bootable installer into a Mac that is connected to the internet and compatible with the version of macOS you're installing.
- Press and hold the Option (Alt) ⌥ key immediately after turning on or restarting your Mac.
- Release the Option key when you see a dark screen showing your bootable volumes.
- Select the volume containing the bootable installer. Then click the up arrow or press Return.
If you can't start up from the bootable installer, make sure that the External Boot setting in Startup Security Utility is set to allow booting from external media. - Choose your language, if prompted.
- Select Install macOS (or Install OS X) from the Utilities window, then click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.

A bootable installer doesn't download macOS from the internet, but it does require an internet connection to get firmware and other information specific to the Mac model.
For information about the createinstallmedia
command and the arguments you can use with it, make sure that the macOS installer is in your Applications folder, then enter the appropriate path in Terminal:
You may have to attempt a re-installation of the correct supported OS X operating
system from last supported retail install DVD media, or from original as-shipped
restore-install system media kit.
There would be no 'recovery' mode in those older Mac series computers because
Apple did not have systems support online to download complete systems. Nor
could the Safe mode work IF the system has not been personalized on installation.
If the hard disk drive checked out OK and isn't worn out (portable computer hard
disk drives have a relatively short life compared to desktop computers) it would
need to be correctly erased and re-formatted to HFS+ Journaled.
The original media included additional applications the later full retail installer does
not have; those extras would be on other retail DVD media. iWork, iLife, and other
parts whose presence were on the Mac when new, won't appear there from the full
retail install DVD system disk. To restore the computer to its original system, what-
ever that may have been in your case, does require preparation. And good hardware.
Because your thread hasn't a reply after a few days, I thought to mention these things.
And I've an iBook G4 12-inch 1.33GHz mid-2005 (last version) which shipped with an
original Tiger 10.4.6 on grey-label DVDs. One disk includes an Apple Hardware Test.
Mine had been running Leopard 10.5.8, not happily; so after occasional use, I restored
it to the original system and updated to last step of Tiger 10.4.11. I do have extras, on
CD and DVD media, so some of that which now is harder to locate online, I have here.
Also, because the older Apple batteries (had two) were from the Apple Recall/Exchange
program and unable to sustain adequate run-time, I bought a NewerTech battery from
OWC macsales online; after reading battery calibration instructions, have been using it.
The last version TenFourFox (FPR2) browser works OK with Tiger, and Leopard, in PPC.
So if you need a modern browser, that build is based on recent Firefox; and it's OK.

Not sure how to address your issues; because most Apple Authorized Service Providers
don't do much with those vintage and obsolete models of Macintosh, those who do may
surprise you with their per-hour tech fees. Because the iBook G4 is rather difficult to fix
the DIY online manuals such as iFixit.com for Mac (iBook G3/G4) may be daunting.

To find someone who can do the work 'correct the first time' can be less costly. Some
at distance who are equipped to do full-service restoration (logic board resolder, etc) are
still a bargain compared to similar local services. You could inquire of powerbookmedic, or

wegenermedia.com among others; the latter may have access to more original/new parts.
These kind of shops can repair most any Apple. At least a portable is easy to ship.
In any event...
Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
